What can she claim ?

I would like some advice for my sister, she lives with her hubby and two children (5,2) and her hubby has recently started up his own business with his brother. At the moment they are just covering the costs of the business and their for not getting any wages. My sister has lost over £100 per month from tax credits and today received a letter telling her that her school meal application has been rejected. Is she entitled to anything else? because at the moment she cant feed her children let alone pay her rent.

  • Council tax benefit, housing benefit, and ask tax credits to reassess claim on basis of this year's estimated income because of the drop from last year.
  • Did the husband not factor in how they would pay the bills before he started this venture?!

Also they need to look at Universal Credits - as from April businesses that do not make "much profit" will be looked at with regards to benefits. This is several months away, but it would be sensible to read the proposals and see what if any effect they would have on the family.

Isn't she receiving child benefit and child tax credits?

She can enter the info on the Turn2us online benefit checker to see if they qualify for working tax credits, child tax credits, child benefit, housing benefit (if renting), council tax discount.

To qualify for WTC, parents with children must work at least 24 hours per week with one of them working at least 16 of it.

Households who are rejected for free school meals are typically those in receipt of WTC (or earn too much). What was the reason for the rejection?
  • I think he thought that the money would role in and all would be well, she gets tax credits but her review letter came a week ago saying she will lose £100 pm, and the accountant has been on to the to say that he is the director and cant take a wage until the company bills have been paid, but they have still cut the money. She has made an appointment with the CAB for Thursday, and i have passed on your info, Thank you all.
