Lost iPad - can I claim on contents insurance

That's it really. Our iPad has gone missing while we were at my mums clearing out some of my late dads things. We arrived home without it and obv assumed it was at mums. However we have searched and searched and it isn't there. The only conclusion is that it has somehow been thrown out with some of dads things. However I can't check or prove this as we have just assumed it would turn up if we looked hard enough so obv missed checking the rubbish.
I am very risk averse and have recently (before the loss) taken out a tesco finest contents Policy. What I can't work out is if this is the sort of eventuality that insurance covers? It seems mad but there is no other possible explanation. We have searched mums house six or seven times and it just isn't there. Can anyone tell me if it would be covered. The policy has possessions away from the home cover. It is more the event I am unsure of.
Many thanks

You would be covered only if you had all-risks as standard on the policy and either the purchase receipt or some evidence of ownership (box, manual etc) depending on their policy.0

I can defo prove I bought it as it was a chrimb present for my husband. Also bought from tesco! Have box. Most likely receipt or similar record.
Policy doesn't call itself all risks but is unspecified possessions cover and states coverage anywhere in the world for personal possessions lost or stolen. The thing that bugs me is that we don't know what has happened to it. The chucked in the bin scenario is my best guess. Def not stolen and totally untraceable in the house. Don't want to look like a scammer and calling up a claim for such odd circus if it won't be covered as I have another 11 months of policy to get through.0 -
The two issues will be:
1) Arguing you didnt take reasonable care if you say you threw it in the bin
2) What is your excess & which model of iPad? Tesco's default is £200 and with an iPad (refurb) starting from £259 it certainly will not be worth making a claim for £59!0 -
Yes I could see how that would be. To be honest I can't quite believe it had been thrown out. It is just too daft to be true. An alternative is that My toddler threw it in the bin. She has form for chucking things in the bin but only at home (she loves brabantia touch top bin) and she loves the iPad so I don't think that's possible.
I don't think the excess is £200 as I hate high excesses and always pay to reduce them (for the very reason that they make it pointless claiming). The iPad was not wifi but was 32gb newest model at chrimb. I paid about £500 for it. They couldn't offer me a refurb. Policy says replacement or money. New for old is standard. It would state if refurb surely. Will check schedule for excess. Hope it isn't £200. Thought it was £500 -
It wont be a refurb that Tesco provide but when considering the "loss" you suffer you could now buy a replacement yourself for less than you originally did if you were willing to consider refurb which probably wasnt an option when you originally bought it.
Certainly do some dummy quotes online before informing them, even if you have a £50 xs and it is £500 for the replacement so a claim of £450 you may find the loss of your NCD/ claims history and having to declare it for up to 5 years may still outweigh the benefit of claiming.0 -
Did you have icloud setup on it? might be able to use the website to see where last connected.... at least might be able to remote lock...0

Alas no. Knew nothing of this functionality till we lost it and I googled trackg lost iPad. It wasnt a 3G one though so would only work on wifi and I'm 100% certain it wasn't stolen. Doubt they have wifi at the dump. This is all so unfunny. I am gutted. Such an expensive thing to lose0
