Removal of asbestos garage roof

Any ideas how much it would cost to remove the asbestos roof from a single-car garage?

Get some bags and do it yourself. Otherwise be prepared to pay £2k-£3k.

Search google for the great asbestos scam.

The stuff used on garage roofs is fairly low risk. Just avoid breaking it up and causing dust. Your council will provide a collection facility at the tip, you just have to get it there. If you employ somebody to do it for you, it'll cost.

I took panels off an old outhouse, wrapped them up in big plastic bags, snapped in half and took to the tip. They had a big red asbestos skip.

We're having the garage removed by builders and they say they won't touch it until the asbestos is gone. I'm not sure how happy they'd be if we did it ourselves.

Its got nothing to do with them how it is removed if their contract doesn't start until AFTER it is gone.

There's another thread on here regarding a hole in an asbestos roof. Have a read, asbestos cement board is low risk (5% asbestos fibres). The reason your contractors don't want to touch it is because if they remove it they have to pay for disposal as a trade rather than yourself who could probably dispose of it in a council facility for free, or atleast a lower cost.

It's not something to be messed around with but it is certainly possible for a competent DIYer to undertake the work safely

If you have a lot to get rid of a lot, phone a couple of skip companies (it'll be expensive) they should be able to supply an enclosed skip that you place the double wrapped sheets in. I got a roll of 1200g damp proof membrane and gaffa tape, we took ours to the tip ( about 8 visits from a single garage as we had to put the wrapped sheets inside the car ). To remove, sensible ppe (mask, glooves disposable overalls (or throw the clothes away) and boots.

I have been given a quote for £450 plus a £38 disposal fee to the local council. I'm going to go with this, rather than go through the hassle of taking it off myself.

That sounds very reasonable. A lot cheaper than around here.

£ 450 for half a days more than easy work? Good grief - I'm totally in the wrong trade.

    Cheers
