Buying car with private registration
I have agreed a price on a used vehicle from a private seller. The car is just over 3 years old and still has 6 months remaining on a Approved Used warranty. The vehicle itself has a private number plate.
The seller has contacted the DVLA to put the plate 'on retention'. Am I right in thinking that once this is complete, the car can be restored to its original plate - at which point I can drive the vehicle away?
The seller would like me to pay a cash deposit, followed by a bank transfer from within the branch once the reg. plate transfer is complete. The seller has said she will not drive the car during the period between the deposit being paid and the final payment.
Does this all sound legit? What paperwork / contracts should I ask for?

She should have done all this prior to advertising it.
I would get her to sign something setting out a strict timetable. Otherwise she could fanny around for weeks.
You can't even tax it or get it insured easily until it is back on its original plate.0 -
When the owner applies to have the cherished number put on retention, the vehicle will normally be re-registered under its original number.
At that time, the V5C and tax disc will be reissued showing the old/replacement VRM. Once that is done, ownership can pass to you.
I'd pay nothing until the V5C at least is in the hands of the seller.I am a mortgage broker. I agree with the above advice.
Also please note that the DVLA quote up to 6 weeks for the V5 to be sent out. I have just done mine and actually got it back in about 1 week so not too bad.0 -
Thanks folks. I appreciate the advice.0
