My child attended university the first year the grants were scrapped and student loans came in, I was earning about £30000 per year and could claim nothing in grants/fees/accomadation etc, tried everywhere, radio today stated now she could have claimed a grant of £1000 plus per year. As it cost approx £5000 a year for three years, can I claim any of it back from the government?
    any info appreciated,

  • My son is in his 2nd year of Uni. Last year when we filled in the forms I phoned the advice line asking whether I should include in my income the maintenance that my ex husband pays. I was told not to The first year he got nearly the full maintenance grant based on my and my partners salarys. This year I was told that I should include the maintenance on the form, but it would not be included in the calculation. Now he is at uni he has just been told that he no longer qualifies for the uni bursary which was £1,250. On checking the calculations of what his grant is this year i have worked out that they must have included the ex husbands maintentance, on top of my and my partners income that takes our income to just above £29,000 which means he no longer qualifies for the £1,250 bursary and his grant is about a third of what he had last year. I have looked everywhere online but cannot find any mention of whether child maintenence is included as income. IS anyone else in this situation ? we had worked out his budget for the year and it was tight based on the figures we had, now that he has tis amount less he cannot cover his rent, elect, gas etc, let alone buy food.

I am self employed aged 56. I have been told by my accountant if I make a pension contribution equal to my total earned income I can set this all off against my income on my application form for my student sons maintenance grant thereby giving me the equivelant of zero income and so qualifying my sons for the maximum non repayable student grant. Can somebody tell me if this is true?
  • Help!,
My son and his girlfriend are in their first year at Uni (OX Brk). They are trying to sort out a flat for next year and they had hoped to share a room together in a flat with other students but they have been told that they won't be allowed to - they will have to pay individually for seperate rooms in the flat even if they only use one. Has anyone else had any experience of this! Seems daft that they will have to pay for 2 rooms when they will only use one, obviously they expect to pay more for their shared room .

And is it normal for students too have too lay down a deposit of £500-600 each in Feb for a flat they won't start renting until September?

    Yes.

When I completed the form last year the amount of my pension contribution was deducted off my other income when assessing the household income. They will add any unearned income in the household income calculation.

  • Hi
as a homeschooler with 7 children i was wondering if there are any grants that we are entitled to as we have to buy all our materials ourselves (yes it is my choice!). State schools get funding so why shouldn't we?
Or would that be seen as encouraging people to "opt out?"

  • my daughter is a first year student at durham uni, studying business, she has just applied for a maintainance grant as we read the info above and as we earn under £60,000 thought she should be eligible. however that is not the case,as last year she started a degree at leeds met but after 2 months left the course. therfore her application for the grant has been turned down as she is now classed as a 2nd year student, even though she was not advised that their was a grant available to her last year, and she is in her first year. Could anyone offer any advise if their is a way around this for her to be able to get the grant.
  • Could the figures be updated in the download parents' guide because they are all out of date now.
