Good morning.

Wondering if anybody can help.

On my previous PC I had a freeware application called Zapgrab which allowed you to select part of the display to copy and then paste it into a document, I found it very useful.

On my new laptop (Dell Inspiron 1750 running Windows Vista) I tried to download the same but couldn't find it listed as freeware any longer.

So my question is does anybody know of a similar freeware application? I know how to perform 'print screen' but seldom want to copy the whole screen display, just part of it.

Thanks in advance.

PrtScrn copies the whole screen to the clipboard, but

Alt+PrtScrn only copies the active window. Does that help?

If you only want part of the active window, you could Alt+PrtScrn, paste the result into a picture editor, and crop it.

    I use Lightscreen
It has many options including capturing a windows area and copying it to the clipboard
  • Thank you googler and Sumpong, will give both suggestions a try later after work. I am thankful.

Unless you have Vista Home Basic, you already have the Snipping Tool screen capture utility: Choose Start, All Programs, Accessories, Snipping Tool. If it's not there, it may not be activated. Go to Control Panel and open Program and Features (you may have to click Programs first). In the task pane on the left, click Turn Windows features on or off. If necessary, click Continue when prompted by User Account Control. Scroll through the list of features, check the box next to Tablet PC Optional Components, and click OK.

  • Have just dowloaded Lightscreen , which does exactly as I wish, then see the post from arrallas :o.

You are correct arrallas, I have the Snipping tool which also does exactly as required.

Thank you to you all for taking the time to respond.

    It's also in Windows 7

Tip. I usually go the route of Alt+Printscreen>paint>crop and resize as required>save as jpeg. Then insert the jpeg into Word or similar. This keeps the target document file size low.
