As others have said, it's up to the specific journey.
But only one mention of cycling:
Short journeys -cheapest and often quickest in city centres.
Longer journeys - public transport and folding bike.
Electric bike anyone?
But cycling is not too pleasant when it's poor weather.

folding bike = bad (unless expensive one) . I bought two. both of them the right side pedal broke off after just two short trips.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

Agreed that cheap bikes of any sort (BSOs) are badfolding bike = bad (unless expensive one) . I bought two. both of them the right side pedal broke off after just two short trips.
However you have to factor in the cost of buying (and maintaining) the bike against fares from home to train station, from train station to work and the reverse journey. An extreme example is:
5 days a week, 4 daily journeys at £1.50 per journey = £30 per week
27 weeks = £810
After half a year your brand new £800 Brompton is paid for!
And it can be used at other times and it does hold its value.
Of course your numbers will be different and my example doesn't include season tickets etc.
