Car insurance continuity question

I have car insurance with Mazda (highly unrecommended). Had a ding in a car park with someone who drove an older car. The woman apologised. Anyway Mazda were unhelpful in my claim and said ghey would wait for the other party to get in touch which they hadnt, I got the work done for a hundred quid and never pursued it.
My renewal has come through and i have lost three years Ncb. I wont get this reinstated until 9 months have passed. I could pay a a grand for the insurance and wait and hope the premium is readjusted....
But i am a named driver on a direct line policy and i have been quoted 450 for the year so tempted to take that
But do i need to have no break period on my policy to keep my 5 years ncb or can i go onto direct lines policy using my ncb with them and then reinsure after a year using my 5 years ncb?

Most companies accept NCD that is up to 2 years "old".
You do need to disclose this incident to any new insurer you approach for quotes!0
