The same could be said about a home that has an alarm box installed.

A padlock, alarm, steering locks, etc. are there as deterrents.

In life, where there's a will, there's a way - but we can all do out bit to make it more difficult for the criminal.

This is open to interpretation but by attaching a pad-lock, it would be fair to say you did your best to prevent a theft.
    No it wouldn't.

Not leaving anything valuable inside a tent would be doing your best to prevent a theft.

Why are you defending this clearly bad advice from MSE?

Next time, ask for tips here instead of making them up, then getting egg on your face!

Just a section from the article:

'We spoke to the Association of British Insurers plus insurers Aviva, Direct Line, Lloyds TSB, Staysure and Tesco to get some top tips to help you sleep a little easier on the rough camp-bed floor.'

How many of those have actually been to a festival though? It's all very well and good people who have never been giving advice on what to do but myself and other people posting on this thread have been to festivals and are offering advice based on personal experience and the fact we've been there done that.

Comparing a tent in a festival to a house on a street is ludicrous. For a start you seldom open your front door to find someone asleep less than 2 feet away from you, at a festival you do. You get thousands and thousands of people crammed into fields. It's not the same as being on a residential street. Secondly houses are a lot sturdier and more resilient than tents considering a house is bricks and mortar and a tent is a piece of fabric. And alarm will make a sound and alert people to a crime a padlock will do nothing.

Like someone posted above, the best way to protect your valuables is keep them on you or don't take them with you. Not lock them in a tent.
You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.
