Home insurance due for renewal.

Hi

At the end of the post is a few questions please.

My home insurance is due for renewal, which I am glad about because I pay £12.66 a month for the following and think it's a bit expensive.
It covers:

  • Contents standard cover £16,300 including valuables for £4890.00.
  • Contents Accidental damage £16,300.00
  • Home emergency £500
As I am in a flat, my buildings insurance is automatically paid so I only need contents cover.

This is what I would like in a home insurance policy.

Accidental damage
Cover for smartphone and laptop
Cover for emergencies

The laptop and smartphone are the only 'valuables'

Does the laptop and smartphone come under standard contents cover or do I have to get additional insurance for them?

After looking on confused.com or the meerkat company, or such like and finding one that suits me, will the new insurance company tie things up with my old insurer or do I do that myself, and if so when?

Thanks for your help in advance :)

Home insurance will cover them and you can add them as Personal Possessions if you want cover outside of the home for them. It does not however cover breakdown so if you want cover for if they are faulty you will need a separate policy.

Your new insurers will not square everything with the old insurers. You will need to phone the old insurers and tell them you wont be renewing with them and so the old policy should be allowed to lapse - they may negotiate so you may want to hold off buying until you have actually spoken to the old insurers.

Your new insurers may ask you to provide proof of your claims history/ no claims discount and you'd do this by sending your renewal notice to them but many will do this on your behalf. Just make sure you READ what they send and do anything they ask within a reasonable time frame. Too many file the letters unread and then find their insurance was cancelled as they failed to provide the evidence requested.

Delete the cover for emergencies. It is horrendously expensive.

If you really need this, shop around and get it seperately. AA do it for £72 a year.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
