Section 21 and Sky Contract

Hi,

Don't know if anybody can help... I was in a 6 month tennancy agreement with my landlord (via a letting agency) and I've been given a section 21 notice as he wants to reonvate the house for his father.

I've got a sky contract which is for 12 months and as I'm moving back with my parents who already have the sky package I either need to continue paying the £50 a month or terminate the contract which will cost me at least £300.

Can I get the landlord to help with the costs/pay the termination etc? Or is it tough as I got the house on a 6 month contract?

Hope that makes sense !!

afraid that the sky contract is none of your landlord's concern - the landlord terminated the tenancy legally using the break clause in the contract so your 12 month contract with sky is something you need to sort out with them yourself.

you could ask your parents to terminate their sky contract (if they have had it for more than 12 months) and then transfer your sky contract to their house. or you could just explain to a sky person on the phone that that is what you will do and ask them to apply common sense.

If your parents do not agree (like mine..), simply downgrade your Sky contract to the simplest package (which is around £21.50 per month) and continue to pay until your contract is up. Then, the Sky box is yours and you could connect to have Sky multiroom or w/e in your parents house.

Your landlord has no obligations on your Sky contract - the AST was 6 months, there was no guarantee you'd be able to stay past this.

The same happened with my friend's son. He was moved out of his rented place due to Section 21. He had Sky for 5 months then. He got his parents to cancel their contract as they have been with them for 5 years, used their son's newish box and kept the contract under his name to reduce problems. Once the 12 months was up, they cancelled and started again with a new Sky contract under her DH's name.

What they did with the payment was to did a bank transfer about 3 days before the DD came out of their son's bank account.

Or you should not signed up something which needed a year's contract when you only were supposed to be at the rented place for 6 months.

Not really helpful to the OP since they have done this!! Hindsight is a wonderful thing

OP - could you afford to pay up the full amount? Maybe call and ask if they will discount the fee if you pay upfront in full rather than carry on monthly?

Looking for holiday ideas for 2016. Currently, Isle of Skye in March, Riga in May, Crete in June and Lake District in October. August cruise cancelled, but Baby due September 2016! :j
  • About 6 years ago we had to leave a flat before the end of the first year with Sky and I wrote them a letter explaining that Sky was not allowed in the place we were moving to. They were actually very reasonable and cancelled the contract with just one month's notice payment so I didn't have to pay the full year. It's worth a try - it worked for me!

I would try asking the landlord to help you out.

He wants the property back for his father to use, and the Section 21 notice itself does not mean that you have to vacate the property. If you dig your heels in you could extend the time before he could get possession of the property and he would incur additional costs to do so.

It could be worth putting this to the landlord and asking if he would pay the termination fee to avoid this.

Quoted for truth ... this is always the best starting point. The last post is unhelpful - initiating a confrontation with your landlord over something that is nothing to do with him/her is unlikely to help, and could cloud other dealings with them.

Another less aggressive option might be to speak/write to the landlord explaining the situation, and asking if he would be interested in taking over the contract - will give him something to watch while the renovations take place, and potentially save a connection fee when his father moves in.

Good advice. It's always better to try screw someone else over rather than deal with your own problem yourself.
Why bother even asking? Just stop paying rent and use the money to pay the disconnection fee. After all, it's the landlords fault isn't it!
