I'd second Naki's suggestion of Ramsgate. My initial suggestion was that if you like a walk, walk the clifftop route from Broadstairs to Ramsgate, and back on the beach/vice versa, depending on the tide. It's a lovely walk, you can stop off at the park on the cliffs to check out the ring neck parakeets (let loose years back, and now prolific) and have an ice cream when you get to Ramsgate harbour, which is the only Royal Harbour in the UK.Only dead fish go with the flow...0

My heart and brothers are still in Ramsgate, fantastic beach and harbour but a long walk from the station.
Sadly the town is much like all coastal towns (like margate) I also love herne bay if the weather is bad there are plenty of amusements.
Just remember to get your family railcard thingy and book in advance to save the pennies.

Margate may be a little run down but is definatley on the up.
There is the new Turner centre that has breathed life into the old town and if its a beach your looking for Margate has the best of them all. Sad to see such horrible comments as it really is not as bad as people like to make out, also we get a sunset Ramsgate loses the sun on the beach at about 5pm and broadstairs also. Turner painted the sunsets from Margate and if you hang around long enough you will see why.0 -
