Seller wants me to cancel the order...

I ordered stuff on Thursday and paid for them.

Fast forward to Sunday night ( after I'd sat all day in the house thinking they might have turned up because they were on a 48 hour delivery service on the Friday) and the seller emails me to tell me he'd forgotten the stuff was on Ebay, there had been a death in the family (heard that loads of times) and would I accept an extra five of half of the size I'd ordered.

I was irritated, so said no. I asked for a refund asap which he has done.

Now I get an email asking me to cancel the order so that he can get his ebay fees back!

How do I go about doing that, and should I even do it?

Obviously you are in a difficult situation - to me it would depend on how the messages were worded and whether they were contrite and apologetic (which might suggest it was a genuine situation) or whether brusque and matter-of-fact without apology in which case I would be more sceptical.

Only you can see that communication so only you can make that judgement.

I think it's up to you. I'm not in the situation you're in - that message is borderline to me but even though they did say sorry it seems a little poorly and unprofessionally written (what business sends anything like that out to customers?). I'd probably need to be in your shoes to know whether I would or would not cancel.

Death in family or ran out...?
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Wasn't concentrating on his business, perhaps. That suggests to me it could be genuine. They are also trying to make it up to the buyer.

Perhaps accept the cancellation and leave no feedback. Unless you have time pressure you have your money back without a fight to go elsewhere.

I would probably leave no feedback and refuse the request.

  • I paid for them via Paypal, but because the money went from the bank instantly, there is a hold on the refund for a few days. Which means I can't order more from anyone else because I don't have any extra spare money--which is a bit irritating tbh.

Because I didn't reply to the seller, he's gone through Ebay and started a cancellation of order himself and if I don't reply by 20 Aug, I won't have any say in it.

You can dispute the cancellation, I did so when a seller treated me appalling - out of principle I refused to cancel the order and let them walk away without any feedback or fees. Ebay were completely on my side, though the seller did later dispute my negative feedback and have it removed which was a bit annoying as Ebay had told me themselves to leave honest feedback.
My selller was pretty rude about the whole situation though which is why I decided to be so stubborn - if you think it might be a genuine mistake and they've tried to make it up to you, I might be tempted to let it slide.

It's up to you whether or not to accept or decline it - by 20 August.

Maybe sleep on it. If you feel that way, then decline it. As I said, I'm not directly in your shoes so I think it should be up to you.

Just for his cheek in opening the thing to get his fees back I am going to decline him.
