What can I claim?

Hello,

I am 29, live with my parents and earn £750 a month from work.

I have autism or something like it. I struggle socially, can't talk to people, try to avoid people if I know they are going to talk to me. I could go on but hopefully you've got it.

I want to move out to live on my own. Because of my condition I can't flat share or get a better paid job.

So am I entitled to any benefits that will help my get a flat because I will find it hard to live off £750 a month and can my parents make a claim because they have to look after me?

Hi osborn, do you have any medical reports or have you ever been tested for autism? Your going to need medical backing, sick notes from your GP etc, if you wanted to claim help based on your problems. I don't know about HB (housing benefit) or anything personally but for your parents to get any financial help for looking after you (I assume you mean carers allowance) you'd need to be getting DLA I think at middle rate or higher. Are you sure moving out is such a good idea right now? You might benefit from some therapy if your uncomfortable in social situations. Good luck to you.

So you can't share because of your condition and you think you parents should be be paid because they look after you. Which is it ? Oh and who looks after you when you are at work ? Do Sainsbury's provide you with a carer ?

Under Housing benefit rules, those under the age of 35 only qualify for a room in a shared property rather than their own self contained 1 bedroom property.

You can identify the shared rate for Local Housing Allowance (HB in the private sector) on the Direct Gov or local council website.

Then you can put this and your earnings into the Turn2us online benefit calculator which will calculate if you are due any tax credits, council tax benefit or housing benefit (LHA).

You can live in any size property you like but have to make up the shortfall in rent with your benefits and employment income.

Your parents won't be required to put in a claim for housing benefit - you will as you are the claimant but they can help with the paperwork.

You could look at applying for social housing - apply to the local council and housing associations. There could be a long waiting list - read the Shelter and Direct Gov websites about how social housing allocation works.
