Problems Transferring Direct Debits

Hi Forum,

I recently switched current accounts from RBS to Co-op because i was so fed up of RBS.

I was promised a hassle-free switch, but this hasn't been the case. 5 of my 7 direct debits failed, probably because the switch ended up being so close to the 1st of the month when my DDs are taken.

It turns out that the DDs that failed were because the DD was attempted from my old bank, RBS. I had sufficient funds to cover the payments, but RBS told the companies that they no longer held any DD mandates.

Co-op said that they would honour any attempted DDs claimed from RBS should RBS then pass that request along to Co-op, but it turns out that RBS just refused the DD request and left it at that.

Anyway, my question is: does my old bank (RBS) have any obligation to inform my new bank of the DD being requested? Or are they allowed to screw me over by refusing to help a departing customer?

Cheers for any advice.

  • You should complain to the new bank IMO.
Having said that you should have left more time for the D/D to go through.
RBS are right in what they told you - once they have transferred the D/D to the COOP they hold no mandate to pay them. Sorry if this is not what you want to hear.
Next time a bank tells you that the switching process is hassle free you will have an answer for them won't you?
Personally I would the switch manually ie open a new account transfer the D/D manually by informing each company myself then when I knew that each had been transferred close my old account.
    I wouldn't touch a bank switching team!

I switched a joint current account from Santander to Nationwide earlier this year to take advantage of Nationwide's Flexclusive ISA (already had a FlexAccount but not a 'main' one). Nationwide kept me informed on a regular basis, and all DDs were switched without a hitch.

Haven't actually closed the Santander account as its handy for speedy access to their frequent offerings of good savings rates :)
