New EU Cookie Law

  • HiYa paulstar, most of the comments other than your own and Mista_C .. .. have been 'non sequitur'. As Mista_C says in the previous thread there's plenty of good freely available code available for those that wish to comply.

Yes, that's why I made the comment in #24 that most but not all public do offer a 'bespoke tailored' version but almost all commercial private offer no such facility. I suspect the season that there is a variance in the public sector websites offerings is probably due to the fact that they either (1) make a 'monetary profit' from cookies that are non-essential or (2) just bad / lazy / coding.

Take the two MOD examples posted:

    - The MOD one I posted properly offers a friendly, quick click, plain speak English that takes all of 2 seconds to understand tailor and use.

    - The MOD site you posted offerers a convoluted lazy cop out re-referral that the public will be frightened of, and will not understand, and so offers no improvement / benefit from the consumers point of view. This of course applies to DOT Gov and DOT Public sites, the commercial sector protected by the incredibly powerful DMA will only ever be reluctantly dragged screaming eventually into protecting the consumer, as is evidenced already by the UK Gov / ICO's moratorium on the EU's [ e-Privacy directive ] cookie laws.

    Richie,

One thing I don't understand is your objection to Google Analytics cookies.

Analytics lets website owners see how (anonymous) users navigate around their site etc, so they can tailor their sites to be more user friendly, more easily found etc. Yes, of course, for commercial webistes (and not all websites are commercial) this helps them maximise revenue but what's wrong with that? I can't see how that compromises your privacy given that analytics data is anonymous.
  • Saying analytics is a breach of privacy is like saying a shopkeeper shouldn't be allowed to notice which of his items customers look at more. It's just not a reasonable premise.
  • paulstar,

For me its more fundamental its really about implicit explicit and that all consents should be [ explicit ] mine, and that I should have the right to be able to tailor each individual site I visit. As I said in #24 this site earns its very bread from referrals and adverts [ spam ] my relaxed view of which cookies MSE uses, would however be very different to the very restrictive opportunities for cookies I would grant to other sites I visit.

So its about explicit & implicit and about the very few seconds it takes to 'tailor' my visit if only the websites I visit were forced to offer me the explicit option. Its clear to me that 99% of any site I was not buying from needs nothing other than 'strictly essential' cookies and that's what the default explicit option gives me.

As to G-analytics, if anything it helps ' cream rise to the top' and so is ostensibly good for the consumer. The browser on one puter / account used by two different people shares the same unique visitor recorded ID, so even though two unique individuals accessed the site info generated by G-analytics would be wrong for me / or wrong for my partner / but right for the website. So G-analytics is not a 'biggie, its about explicit / implicit and a consumers right not to be tracked spammed.

    Ritchie,

Thanks for the reply. I understand what you want to be able to do, but not why. Google Analytics do not allow anyone to get at an individual's (or their computer's) browsing habits, nor do they enable anyone to send you spam.

Wouldn't setting IE to delete cookies when you close IE solve your problem (whatever that is)?
