MTB - what size tyre?
Options
Sorry, I have googled this, but am still in the dark! I need some new tyres for an oldish mountain bike and would like to change to something less knobbly, as I only use it on roads. The tyre size is 26 x 1.75 - so does this mean I can only fit tyres of the same size, or can I fit 26 x 1.5 (or 1.95)? I only ask because there doesn't seem to much choice in the 26 x 1.75 size. Also, if I can fit 26 x 1.5, would these be a bit lighter??
Cheers...

has to be 26",thats the wheel size
1.75 is the width
so have a look and see what clearence that leaves you on the frame for going wider.
1.5 can be li8ghter or heavier. its really down to its make up
Are you looking for a road based semi slick type tyre?
you can look at the ERTRO marking to give you an idea of width

I've recently (April) changed from 26" x 1.95" knobbly tyres to Schwalbe Marathon green guard 26" x 1.5" under £30 for the pair in my LBS. These were cheaper than the legendary Marathon Plus
Much smoother and easier ride on the roads. They are fine on the bridle and towpaths.
You will need new 1.5" inner tubes
Up to yet no visit from the puncture fairy (Dave looks round for wood to knock on, then the skeptic in me says don't be daft:))
