VW Beetle... What should I look out for?

Hi guys, looking to buy a new car and I honestly have no clue of any major no nos or things to enquire about... Basically I'd like to buy a vw beetle, have around £3000 to spend and was hoping for something around 2002ish. I do a fair bit of motorway driving and ideally would like it for the next 3 years. I've looked on whatcar and parkers but if anyone has any knowledge of these cars i'd appreciate your advice.

Thanks!

    Buy a golf.
  • Haha thanks :)
  • Timing belt every 40,000 miles.... if it breaks it's a new engine!!

Don't know where you are in the country but look on evvo.co.uk owners site for tips. I've had mine a year and love it. I'm selling but only as I just bought a CZC convertible!
You are probably looking at the right money, mine is an 02 1.8t with 80,000 miles that has just had timing belt & service (full prior history too) and is being sold with 2 sets of wheels @£3500.

  • Clutch. always try the clutch if its slipping it needs a new one these suffer with premature clutch failure 40k miles is about the mark the clutch goes. small boot space, not enough leg or seat room for 3 adults in the back.

look for signs of accident damage, these cars are horrible in the ice/snow.

1.6 would be the engine i'd recommend, avoid V5 engine.
some had factory upgrades like bumper skirts, center rear exhaust exit, flaired side skirts, and bumper splitter, rear spoiler.
  • Thanks so much for the advice! I really do appreciate it

    £3500 for a 2002 Beetle???? £1000 - £1500 overpriced me thinks.

Plenty on autotrader for around £2000,

2002 cars seem to fetch under £1500 on ebay.

    Completed listing here....
