"Missed" payment due to mystery error

Hi all,
Last month I decided to up the direct debit monthly payment on my Barclaycard. I used the dedicated feature on the Barclaycard website to do so, and everything appeared to go through OK.
However, come payment time, something went wrong and the payment didn't go through, despite there being enough funds in my Barclays current account. I called Barclaycard as soon as I got their email about the "missed" payment and paid it there and then. When I asked why the payment hadn't gone through, they said that the bank had refused the direct debit. When I called Barclays 5 minutes later, they said that there was definitely money in the account, but that Barclaycard had cancelled the request. I'm now stuck with a missed payment mark on my credit history (never had one before!) and a £12 direct debit returned fee from Barclaycard for my troubles. Neither side seems willing to help find out what happened.
Has anyone got any thoughts in how to combat this? I was planning in applying for a loan and using half to replace my old car and half to pay off the credit card, but I guess I'm now less likely to get a favourable rate unless I can get one or both of them to admit it was their fault and remove the mark?
Thanks.

Simple. Make an official complaint, or two, get a reference, explain your concerns and what you want as an outcome. Wait the statutory 8 weeks then if you're not happy take it to the FOS.0

Secure message them, they did this to me,it wll be sorted within 3 months if you stick to your gunsI have a deep burning indifference0

I would send them something in writing, they will have a complaints procedure. They will then generally send you a response saying if you are not happy here is a leaflet to tell you about the Financial Ombudsman.
They should take the fine off, and then check your credit history to make sure it's removed. Then if you're feeling plucky ask them for a gesture of goodwill for the inconvenience!
I have had late payments for bizarre reasons including "the transfer didn't work, something it doesn't, it's not guaranteed so you have to make sure the money has gone in" which is utterly pointless as I don't want to be chasing these things up. My Barclaycard is often paid 2 days late due to them not my bank, so I can't keep checking my account to make sure it's paid, might as well ring up with my debit card and be done with it!0 -

Thanks everyone. I was wondering if there was a specific procedure in case this is a common thing, but clearly the simple complaints route is the way forward. I will sharpen my pen and send off a couple of letters later.
Many Thanks.0
