Working tax credits

Hi all,
In 2010 to 2011 I recieved a bit of wtc. In April 2011 I recieved credits for a month totalling £170 odd pound and because I knew I wasn't entitled to the money I put it to one side knowing they would ask for it back.

I recieved a letter to say I wasn't entitled to the money but they wouldn't take the money until 2012 - 2013 ( where we are now).

I recieved a letter in April 2012 to say that I owed £171.22 but it was still being confirmed and only to get in touch if I didn't think I should have to pay it back due to any changes in circumstances etc.

I moved house in January however I still have access to the house where the letters used to go to so I know ive had none since. It's now August and they have still not sent me a bill asking for the money.

I know people had to have there claims for this year by 31st July so is it possible that there still calculating my old claim to see if I owe the money and the bill is still to arrive?

Does anybody know how this works? I don't want to get in trouble for owing money when I have it sitting ready, waiting to pay.

Please help

Thank you

  • Are you due to get any other Tax credits other than WTC like CTC? If yes they could be possibly planning on deducting it from that. Other than that ring them and ask to speak to a senior manager and between 8-9am in the morning if you can as that is meant to be less busy. If you have that letter handy about the overpayment, then you can tell them its date. It's not as if you are going to tell them you do not owe the money is it? Did you get an award notice for this year? If yes the details might be on that.

    Hi

    Just seen the reply above.

I don't get any other credits/benefits - was taken off after I was informed this year that I still had to pay.
Still no bill has arrived asking for the money. I think I will dig out the last letter later today and give them a call. :(

Did you do a renewal in 2012? Until you did this they wouldn't be able to confirm your overpayment in April 2011 (assuming it was after the 6th April ie in 2011/12 tax year), because they need your income details for the 2011/12 tax year.

Did you get an auto renewal, ie did it say "only contact us if..." followed by various income ranges, or was it a renewal which asked for exact figures?

A senior manager just confirms what the advisor says in a stronger tone. They can't do anything different to an advisor.
