Grass Seed??

Looking for some advice, OH and I are not the keenest gardeners, however last year we paid a landscaper to dig out our garden and turf it, but this year it is completly bare.

We have 2 small boys so it gets a lot of traffic, so we think we will need to put down some grass seed to get it looking healthy again.

But we dont have a clue whether it is the right time of year or what type of grass seed to get.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

When I moved into my new (rented) place the garden was pretty bad especially the grass. It was very patchy and needed a lot of attention but I had very little money. I've found that grass seed from pound shops works brilliantly as does the value stuff from Wilkos. Before putting the seed down though you need to aerate the area by sticking a fork all over. My grass looks a lot better now and grows brilliantly, not bad for a couple of quid.

  • September is traditionally a good time to seed the grass as the weather turns from hot and sunny to wet while still being fairly warm!!!!!!
  • Grass seed needs to be permanently damp to germinate, so you'll be wanting to wait until autumn / winter kicks in. If the seed when laid drys out you'll struggle to get any of it to grow.

I'd wait till autumn too and then sprinkle sand over the top to stop the birds eating the seeds.
(I mentioned this to a lady the other week and I saw her yesterday and she said it worked a treat - weyhey)

I've put grass seed down in all different months, not winter though, as long as the ground in raked and kept wet it will take. My grass was really patchy and horrible when I moved in here 3 years ago, it is now green, thick and lush, and I was no gardener, though I've come a long way since then :)

You do need to keep people off the area for at least 4-6 weeks, probably more, so if the kids use it regularly it won't work and you'll need turf (which again needs to be traffic-free for a few weeks but is less sensitive).

Don't fork the area over as the seed will get wasted deep down the holes! It needs to be cleared, dug over , raked and compacted by foot, then raked again lightly to create slight furrows for the seed. I have never had problems with birds eating enough seeds to affect the lawn.
