Benefits help for student with OH and child

Hi,

I'm trying to work out a rough idea of benefits available if I am a full time student in September. A the moment I know the following approx....

OH income 25 hours £11,000 a year
My bursary £7000 a year
My loan £4500
Childcare? Not sure what we are doing - son is starting his 15 hours free but have not sorted childcare until we definitely know whether I am goin uni
Rent is £850 (looking to move to reduce this, but this takes time)

I don't think my bursary counts as income, but the loan does.

Anyone have an idea of how much benefits or help we are entitled to.

Let me know if you need more information or le me know if you ae in a similar position for me to compare.

  • Bursary is counted as income as is your Student Loan. Your income is around £21,000 a year plus about another £4000 in CTC/CB.

It is unlikely you'll qualify for anything you're not currently getting.
  • Oh - I may have been misinformed about the bursarys. Oh well at least i know where I am!

talk to the university as you may get extra funding as you have a dependant child.

you wont get help with childvare through tax credits as you would both have to be in paid employment of at least 16 hours a week each

Student Finance will help you with childcare.

Forms CCG1 and CCG2 - available on the Student Finance website.

Give them a call to double check your own circumstances.

If they do award you a childcare grant, check it, and make sure they do not overpay you. Often overpayments are recovered from your following years money in one lump sum, leaving you short of cash.
  • As a full time student, you should inform the council tax department as students are usually exempt from paying CT. You should also get some child tax credit, although it won't include the childcare element.
  • Thanks everyone - I had not applied for the childcare grant jus because I didn't know what I was gonna do - but I will sort ur the forms - just wish I knew my timetable! It really doesn't help!

Not sure that this is correct, I receive a bursary and this does not count as income. I live in Wales though so it may be affected by this.

Some good advice above - but rent is £850? A month? Do you live in a wing of Buckingham Palace? That seems something over the top of excessive!

Set your childcare claim up for what you think you will need.

Say if you know you are in Uni 3 days a week, and you need cover for those days, fill in your CCG1 for the full 3 days. It means you get your forms in asap.

Once you know your days you can change your childcare claim. I should think at this time you won't get paid for it until late September/ early October anyway.
