How do you know...

If the Gas dial spins at the correct speed...
Or the Electric counter counts correctly?

I mean the Gas/Leccy man can say its fine but that is no guarantee. At least with a phone bill it's itemised.

Gas/leccy man has no idea if its calibrated and running at correct speed, best he can do is spot if its stopped. there are rough checks you can do yourself such as measuring a known wattage of an applience for a length of time and seeing what the meters recorded
You can have someone come out and check it, but if its ok, there will be a charge, so its a bit of a gamble on your part

What you think they put any old meter on the wall? Why do you think they get changed every some many years? A meter has a life over which its accuracy is guaranteed within acceptable tolerances. After that is can be recalibrated and reused or scrapped.

How do you know they are itemising correctly? Do you log how many seconds the calls are made from your phone to compare with the itemised bill?

They do get calibrated outside of tolerance though...as shown by customers who experience their usage increasing from the date of a meter change.

It could be too old as Spiro was explaining they do have a certified life. Suppliers are known not to replace them all within the required time...

  • are there people who randomly check meters.
What about petrol pumps. I often wonder if they are correct?
