longest boot

Having just bought a tandem and our Mitsubishi van dying we are looking for the car with the longest boot. Please could anyone suggest a car that might fit our bike

Could be a challenge! How long's the bike? Guessing you don't need your back seats up when you're carrying it?

Might turn out to be more realistic putting it on a roof rack?
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

Vauxhall Vectra estate...... My hatchback has an unbelievably huge boot space, the estate is just insane.

I think the important thing here is that most people assume that an MPV/people carrier or 4x4 would have the most space but in truth its often the humble motorway mile munching rep mobile that comes out on top.

Vauxhall Zafira ain't bad either. Not only tall, diesel and turbo, the boot is also long. Being tall you can also move larger than normal items in the boot. Plus they have cam chains so you've no need to worry about a costly timing belt change etc.

What sort of budget and age do you have in mind? The Skoda Superb estate is colossal but it was only introduced a couple of years ago so they're not that cheap.

This was the main factor for me buying my current car. I move furniture and other stuff around from time to time which is usually 6ft long. Can't really stick it on a trailer or roof rack as it can be too heavy to lift, exposed to the elements and easy to nick.

Sedona with the seats out is about 7ft boot space length depending where your front seats are, and like most cars slightly shorter at top at about 6ft. Width-wise the load space is about 4ft at the bottom and like most cars narrower at the top at about 3ft. It's a flat floor and it is the floor too - you're not shoving stuff on the backs of seats unlike the Zafira I had before (although you could leave the seats in and fold them if you wanted to, you'd just lose height). Longer too, as I think the Zafira was about 5ft long. I average 35.6 mpg diesel on fuelly.com (badgernadgers) and they are cheap to buy. Look for ones with the injectors replaced and handbrake done.

    HTH

PS agree with all the other suggestions too, they were on the shortlist. I think there was a Peugot estate too (3008?) and the Skoda Octavia estate IIRC.
  • Thank you to everyone, you're great. We will take you're suggestions and try them out. Hopefully you will see us cycling again in the near future

I can fit a full height set of shelves (i.e. a little over 6 feet tall) in the boot of my 2010 Mondeo hatchback if I fold the back seats down. and prop the shelf on the edge of the folded up seats.

How long is your tandem and how much are you prepared to dismantle it and generally faff around? If you get quick release bolts for the front wheel for example, that would make your life easier.

Oddball suggestion and they're getting a bit long in the tooth these days, but a Volvo 940 estate might be worth a look. 6 feet depth with the seat down and the back hatch is really easy to load into.

MPVs tend to be shorter and taller. This gives them a lot more cubic feet of storage, great for suitcases and shopping, not so good for a tandem.

Maybe you could ride you tandem to a few local car dealerships and test :)
