Mortgage life cover

Hi, after getting married and buying a house, we were sold life cover via the mortgage provider, and advised to have joint life cover with critical illness on both our lives. The house and mortgage is only in my name, so would the cover pay out if my wife was diagnosed with a critical illness, or died ?
The mortgage has about 12 years remaining, so don't want to carry on paying for this level of cover if it would not pay out if the worst happened.
Thanks

Why wouldn't it pay out?
If she's on the policy she's covered.0
