Income based -v- Contribution based JSA

Hi folks!!

I have been popping in and out for a while but decided to register today as I have a question I cant find an answer for if thats ok. :)

I applied for income based JSA following a redundancy and looks like ive been awarded contribution based since the letter recieved today says it will end in 6 months! Obviously I hope to find work befoe then but it was a surprise as the advice I got was that it was doubtfull I would get contribution based even though ive been employed full time for years only having a few months on the dole nearly 3 years ago.

My question is what are the pro's and cons of contribution based V income based JSA? As we all know the government are quiet devious in there ways and just trying to see if there are sinister motives for doing this to me and if not I shall go out and enjoy the sunny day as it was intended lol.

Thanks :)

You answered part of your own question yourself. If you have been fully employed and paying NI for the last 2 full tax years then you get contribution based.

If you had not paid enough NI contributions then you would apply for income based, this would then depend on how much household income you had.

Also why income based gets you benefits that contribution based does not.

There is no deviousness going on, if you have an underlying entitlement to Income based you'll get access to the same benefits and discounts as someone that isn't entitled to Contribution based. If you are still unemployed in six months you'll get Income based instead as long as you still satisfy the criteria.

A millionaire can claim and is entitled to contribution based JSA if they are seeking full time work having lost their well paid job, but will not get all the other benefits that run along side.

If a person has UNDERLYING entitlement to income based they will be entitled to passported benefits. Anyone without an underlying entitlement will not.

Hi guys thanks for your replys!

I finally got my head around what it was I was worried about yesterday as I now understand that should I not find work by 13 weeks, I can still get help with mortgage interest payments aslong as I remain entitled to claim income based JSA even though i'm on contribution based till January.

    Few......

I think this might have been said above but I needed it in layman speak sorry lol. Im single and live alone and have an interest only mortgage thats only 200 a month, will they pay that if I don't find work in time??
