Starting selling again after years - questions

Years ago (before paypal was required) I sold on ebay. I have some personal items I'd like to sell but have some questions.

I'd like a new paypal account for this probably - I may be being over cautious but I don't want to give paypal access to my current account (I only have my debit card on, never linked my bank account)

I have an old current account which is still open which I would like to use (my local branch closed so I changed banks but still have a bit of money in the account, a current debt card etc)

Do I open a business paypal account even though I'll be selling personal items? ( I know I can't have another personal account).

And once I have that sorted out, can I use my new paypal account on my current ebay account ?

Grateful for any advice. I don't know if it's possible to just link this bank account to my current paypal and, if it is, whether that would mean all my payments came from it and not my debit card linked to the current account I actually use. Very confused!

Thanks in advance.

Opening a business account will be needlessly complicated, why not just use the paypal account you have already- assuming it is a premier one and capable of taking card payments?

As long as you never divulge your passwords or fall for phishing emails there is very little that can go wrong. Just make sure you understand the new requirements, have a read of the sticky postage thread and keep safe- only ever log in through a clean link of your own.

Also be aware that as a new seller your funds will almost certainly be held for 21 days by paypal

It's personal, I've never ever sold something and accepted paypal. So I'm pretty sure I either need to upgrade or have a new one. I'm not verified, just address confirmed or whatever it is.

Back when paypal first came in for selling it looked hideously complicated to me - I want payments to come off my debit card linked to the account I use and it seemed that if you sold and linked your bank account that you risked echeques and all the hassle that goes with it!

I really don't want paypal to have a direct debit to my main account when I have a perfectly good secondary one for them to use - people used to advise having a special account for paypal. I'm not worried about phishing, I always type addresses in the bar etc, I just would like the added security to me of having a seperate bank account for paypal, as I have one available. If I can link the account I want to link to my current paypal and still use my main debit card for all my purchases, great! I just didn't know if I could link a bank account which obviously isn't the one for my debit card.

I know about the hold, I'm not in a hurry for the money and obviously I want happy customers so I accept that paypal does this for them.

    Thanks for the reply.

If you have just a basic account then you can open a premier one just for paypal selling. It's only two of the same that you are not allowed to have

Echeques are possible on all paypal accounts, they cannot be blocked or prevented at all. They are completely random, it seems that every now and then something happens and we all start getting echeques, then none for months.

You will have to link something to your account to sell so you can be verified, however they don't usually worry too much for a while. You will of course need it linked though to withdraw your money.

Goodluck with the selling, its a free listing weekend today if you want to dip your toes back into the water.

I've been to paypal and can't obviously see how to get a premier account - it offers me personal or business - will it ask me at some point during signing up for personal if I want premier?

When I tried, personal meant premier so there was no problem setting it all up.

I know I can't completely avoid echeques - I just remember hundreds of threads on ebay related forums about people getting frustrated about the order of their funding sources whereas on my personal account I have one - my debit card.

Then I need to go and see how much the sell your item form has changed!

    Thanks for all your help.

Well, I thought it was all going fine - got my paypal payment, sent my item off today (special delivery because of the price) but noticing I'm not eligible for seller protection.

No idea why, I meet all the criteria I can find - it's a real item, shows up as paid on ebay etc etc I'm sure the transaction will be fine but feels a bit odd!

Log in to your paypal account. It's normally something to do with confirming a bank account, or address. The main account page usually says somewhere if this is the case, telling you what you need to do.

Unless it's something to do with the method of postage you used. You're not protected unless you use a postage method that's trackable online etc.

Thanks but there's nothing there. I verified my account on Friday by completing bank funding thingy and got payment Saturday. I used special delivery and have put the tracking number on ebay and paypal.

The only message on my account is about the 21 day hold which is fair enough but nothing else.
