Washing coats in a washing machine?

With sunshine this weekend, Id like to sort out winter clothes.

Our coats really need a good clean. Drycleaners look quite expensive. Is it okay to wash them on a delicate setting in a machine or hand wash them?

It will partly depend on what they're made from, and whether they have particular coatings applied.

I had a microfibre coat that would not have appreciated being put through a wet wash, and my anorak needed to be washed and then re-proofed with specialist products.
  • Check the care label. The outer fabric may be washable but there may be interlinings that are not!

If any of them are showerproof, don't use fabric conditioner.
