Use your local PO. VED renewals are high value transactions and help to keep them in business. Use it or lose it. And you get the disc in your hand.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)

Thanks - however I can't do that as I am going overseas on a business trip next Sunday and not returning until after the start of September - don't want problems.
Is the internet not accessible from abroad then?

Only intermittently - I am working and as it's in the Middle East the connection isn't always good. It's my third trip this year so I know how 'bad' the connections can be sometimes.

DVLA office is only three miles away and/or will use the PS so will do the thing on Monday and also do the six month thing to get me out of an ongoing situation. Actually went to a PO today... took my current insurance document but couldn't get road tax as it starts after the end of it so needed to bring in my new insurance certificate too but couldn't make it home and back before PS shut! Bit of madness but hopefully will get it sorted on Monday.

Thanks to all those who have contributed here - it's much appreciated.

How long into September? You do have a 7 day (I think) grace period from the expiry date.
    No you don't.

There is no grace period for not paying tax. There is, however, a 5 working day grace period for not displaying your new disc after paying on time. To take advantage of this, you must still have paid online or by phone before the expiry of the current disc, and this period is only to allow time for the disc to arrive by post.

There used to be a 15 day period allowed for paying tax into the following month. I don't know if this is still the same.

However, that is only latitude for renewing, not use. It is not allowed to actually drive the car without having paid the tax.

This might suit the OP, or it might not. For instance driving the car home from an airport car park in early September and renewing the next day would in theory be an offence.

Car is staying at home - airport is on the Metro line and easily accessible.

    PO tomorrow it is!

Separating your VED (road tax doesn't exist), and your MOT and your insurance, resolves this issue very nicely.

My VED is up in april, my Insurance in sept and my MOT in november. I never have problems sorting out VED and as a side bonus garages know they can't hold me to ransom at MOT time, as they can with folks who do all 3 within the space of a week......

    That's probably what I meant. ;)
