Hi

I have rented out my hardstand via parkatmyhouse.com

The car (a 12 year old jaguar S class automatic) turned up yesterday on a transport vehicle with a dead battery (the owner is overseas & so the car has been left unused at another location nearby for a long time)

Due to the dead battery the car had to be left on a public road - as it is untaxed I need to move ot onto my hardstand

I tried recharging the battery overnight but it is completely dead

Unfortunately I do not have another car to jump start it as I am not a car owner at the moment & do not know my neighbours well enough to ask them

My question is as follows :

Can I try to use a different car battery to try to get the car started ?

The other battery (from an old Audi) I have is about 1/2 to 2/3 the size of the huge battery used by the jaguar car

Obviously it still gives out 12 volts but probably less maximum Amps ?

regards

    You can but try!
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
  • Just out of interest, if I was to hire a parking space through the company above, would I be expected to leave my keys with a complete stranger?
What guarantees would I have that the parking space owner wouldnt just use my car as a runaround?

You won't do any damage to the car by trying, and you won't damage the battery unless you keep hammering it till it's flat, charge it, try again, and so on for a few cycles. And if the car's that hard to start it's not going to go anyway :)

Why are you trying to start the car?. It's not yours. Does the owner know you are doing this?

thanks for the replies - the owner called out green flag to resolve the issue

And yes he had given his permission regarding recharging the battery & driving it onto my hardstand (it had been left on a public road by the transport vehicle & it is untaxed)

It does not really matter that he has trusted me with the keys because the car is untaxed, uninsured & unroadworthy - no way I'd be tempted to drive it even if I wanted too

This booking is a very unusual situation as usually people just want to park & use their car rather than just leave it parked & unused for an extended period

Unless its a diesel, they start very readily, even off of a little booster pack. Curious why anyone would want to keep a non-legal old thing like this and pay someone else for the privilege of dumping it.

The car is in generally good condition - when I said unroadworthy all I mean was that it needs an MOT (e.g. needs a new battery, tyres need to be reinflated & the handbrake needs 'unsticking' - all due to having been lying dormant for a while)

he has mentioned that he has intentions to sell it but as he is overseas I guess that a bit difficult at the moment

My suspicion is that the car may have been left at his ex-partners & she had probably been giving him an earful about getting it removed & I was the easiest option at least in the short term

I would imagine it needs a new battery, its been standing a while and has probably been almost fully discharged for a good period of time, this alone will kill a battery as little as 2 years old.
