Car hire with National Car in France - paper licence or photo?

We are flying to France on Wednesday 15th and hiring a car, but we have hit a real problem in that we cannot find my husband's driving licence! We file things like this away so I can't understand whats happened but at the moment we are missing both our counterpart paper licences. I have my photocard licence. Does anyone know if you have to present the paper licence as well as your photocard? On the National website it says
'Customers must present a full and valid driving licence which has been held for a minimum of one year. License must be in Roman alphabet. An international driving licence is valid only if presented with the domestic driving licence. The customer must also provide either an identity card or a passport, return train or flight tickets and a local landline telephone number, this cannot be a mobile number.'

I don't know quite how to read this.
Is there any way you can get an emergency replacement licence?

Thanks in advance

you'll need the paper part as that is where any points on the licence would show up. we have arrived in Spain before now having forgotten our licence and have rung the DVLA who have faxed through a copy of the licence to prove there are no points on it. it cost a few pounds. Perhaps you could ring them on monday and see if they can send a fax to the car hire company?
  • I have travelled all over the world and never been asked for the paper counterpart. Endorsements are only relevant to the UK.

Endorsements are relevant to whether the hire company is willing to rent you a car or at least as to the cost/terms of that rental

Agreed it's hit and miss as to whether you are actually asked for the counterpart - but you are driving illegally without it in may countries
