Change of Vehicle whilst Claim Ongoing?

My insurers are currently dealing with a theft claim on my car which I imagine will take a few more weeks to sort out at least. In the meantime I am without a car so I plan to buy a new one this weekend. What I need to know is whether if I buy a new car and do a change of vehicle on my insurance policy whether the insurance company would still deal with my ongoing claim and payout just as they would if I hadn't bought a new vehicle?

Many thanks

Buying a new car will not affect the claim - why would it?

Some insurers consider a policy finished when they pay out on a total loss/theft but many will do a simple change of vehicle.
  • My only concern was that because they haven't actually paid out on the claim yet, then if I change the vehicle on the insurance policy, effectively they would no longer be insuring the car which was stolen and have no obligation to pay the claim? This is probably far from the truth but thought I'd just make sure before I go out and buy a new car.

The theft occurred whilst it was insured - that's what's important.

Has it been found? What if you buy a new one and your old one turns up.
  • Its not been found yet but its been like 3 weeks so it doesn't seem likely, the police have said they have no leads. I guess its a risk I'm willing to take as I cant live without a car having an 18 month old daughter.
  • "In the event of your car being written off or declared a total loss, your policy will usually come to an end. However, we may allow the policy to continue for a period of up to 28 days from the date you receive settlement to allow you to put a replacement car on the policy."

This is the wording from my policy booklet, not really sure what to make of it...

They are saying that normally the policy ends after a total loss payment. Meaning you have to buy a new policy for any replacement car.

Though they may continue the policy if you get a replacement swiftly.

Speak to them to ensure any new car you fancy buying is acceptable to them.
  • All of the above posters are giving you wrong advice.

The clause in the terms means that, if you have a claim and your car is stole or written of they will give you 28days to replace the car in your existing policy (throughout the 28days you would still pay for the insurance) or if the car is not replaced they will cancel the policy. Either way the will still pay out on the claim, I'd say the cheaper option though is to change your car on the existing policy as if it cancels chances are you'll need to pay the remainder of the 12 month policy as the theft claim is a fault claim, therefore they are going to be effectively losing a few grand on paying you out for the car, so they will expect you to finish paying the premium.

Exactly which posts contain wrong advice?
