Paypal chargeback for item sold in April

Hi.

I am new to the forum, I hope someone can help me - it does seem to be a common problem...

Paypal have just slapped a chargeback on my account for an item I sold on April 10th. The buyer claims the transaction was not authorised by her and therefore the cc company has applied the chargeback, my account is in the red by a substantial amount. I just sold a load of items yesterday too, some of which are still awaiting payment. That money will get swallowed up by the negative balance, so I won't be getting any of it for the time being.

I've spoken to paypal about it as the buyer left me positive feedback on April 20th about the item. Surely, I said, this constitutes proof they received the item? Apparently not, and I now have to prove that I actually sent the item to them. What?

How that this be correct? As soon as she left me feedback, and as soon as I ever receive feedback, I consider the sale finished and all the paperwork is usually filed in the bin.

I have still got to check at home in case I have by some miracle kept the proof of postage. But added to this, because the transaction was more than 3 months ago, ebay doesn't have the detailed information about the sale either, making it very difficult for me to build a case in my defence.

Anyone got any advice about this or experienced the same/similar. Am I right in getting that sinking feeling I won't ever see that money again?

I've already been told that unless I have got proof of postage, I don't stand a chance of resolving this in my favour. This seems incredibly unfair of course. Has anyone successfully managed to negotiate their way out of this awful situation?

Thank you.

We do usually suggest that sellers keep their proof of posting for at least 6 months, as that is how long a bank chargeback can be considered. However that doesn't help you and without that POP you are unlikely to be able to defend the claim.

Personally though I would contact the buyer, see if it is a mistake as it often is. Get their contact details, if you still can, and give them a call.

I have defended these bank claims successfully before, but keep all my POPs so didn't really have a problem- sorry.
