Getting a refund for an Ebay purchase. Help please

Hi, I bought a pair of boots on Ebay and was delighted when they arrived. However when I put them on and walked in them the soles cracked, from side to side, in several places. They were not fit for purpose.

I realised that the boots had probably been stored for a number of years ( they smelt musty) and that the sole had perished. Big chunks of rubber/plastic crumbled away from the sole too.

I contacted the seller who was really offended and told me that I had to return the boots before she would issue a refund. I offered to send photos but she would not consider it. I returned them on Tuesday at great expense!

Anyway she has now contacted me asking for my Email address so that she can refund the purchase. (I am pretty sure that the boots haven't arrived back yet)

Why does she need my email address?
When I do an Ebay refund I simply go through paypal and issue a refund from there. I am suspiciuos of things not being right but not sure why. She was so OTT and rude in her emails to me.....

Any comments?

She maybe wants to send money to your Paypal account, for which she needs your email address.

Tell her to go to the transaction page in Paypal for your item, then there should be a link for her to refund all your original payment. By rights she ought to refund your return postage too, but she can't be made to do this by eBay.

    Hiya,

I once asked a seller for their email address for a refund as it was easier and quicker for me to do it that way rather than searching through loads of Paypal transactions to find the right one....x

Don't you miss out on Paypal fees being refunded by doing it that way?

    Yes you do.

I'd be wary if someone tried to refund me this way in case they were planning to issue a chargeback or something.

I'd do as crowqueen says and give her instructions on how to find the refund button!

Yes you do, and the original transaction can still be subject to a chargeback as well.

I think what people are trying to explain is that if the money is sent separate to the original transaction (a) the seller may be able to claw it back (though not if sent as a personal payment, i.e. not for goods), and (b) the buyer might pay fees if it is sent as a charge for goods or services, but more importantly for a seller (c) a dishonest buyer could still open a case in eBay and get them to refund on proof of receipt, leaving them with double their original payment.

If it's a personal payment you might pay fees if it is a money transfer not drawing on a Paypal balance. A refund would cost you 20p but be more advantageous in the long run. You should know the rough date you were paid and the name of the buyer.

There's no really good reason ever to send a refund separate from the original transaction.

There would be no point in doing a chargeback on a refund, however I referred to the original payment that had not been refunded.

It would not be a refund. It would be a separate transaction.

Sorry, what I meant was I could scroll down the list on Paypal and find the correct email address and then refund from there, rather than having to click on various payments to find the right one...x
