Hi All
Haven't been around in a while, things going OK generally but in the last few weeks having problems with co-op visa debit being declined at Morrisons pay-at-pump; local train station when buying ticket (twice); O2 online payment & yesterday Wilkinsons.
Had enough money in account (had insurance payout - don't ask ) so no prob there at moment. I originally thought was related to recent banking crash as started at same time... but happened yesterday too
Tried to find any recent threads on problems but most come up from a couple of years back - are there still issues with these cards?
Which means should I request a replacement card?
OR look at getting another account, pre-paid or credit card just in case?
Advice appreciated
TIA

It's probably because the card is being recognised as an Electron, which was always useless and is even more so now.
I had the same thing a few times - including in a Co Op supermarket. Not had any issues for a while though. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Hi,
I opened my co-op cashminder account in Feb this year after going BR. The only place I've tried to use it where it wouldn't work was Morrisons. I had a full trolley of shopping and knew there was more than enough in the account to cover it, highly embarrassing! I ended up having to leave my shopping all bagged up at the till and run to the nearest cash point to withdraw the cash instead. You should have seen the queue that built up whilst I was gone! No problems anywhere else I just don't shop at Morrisons anymore!

I've used mine at Morrisons many times now but I think I had a similar issue to begin with.
Paypal card payments still don't like the CoOp card thoughThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Fingers crossed, so far no issues...even with Paypal.......and very often, it isn't the card that is at fault, but the card readers in some supermarkets. They can malfunction, and the supermarket should either swipe, or ask for a signature.[it has happened to me at a petrol station....several times....the same station]...
Some weeks ago, Morrisons were having issues with HSBC cards...[the till readers not recognising them]...and displayed temporary notices to that effect.
In the past, when I have had similar issues to the OP's at Tesco's...I was 'informed' I should nip out to the cash point and withdraw cash to the required amount.
I didn't like this attitude, so I left a full trolley at the till, and never returned.
The implication by staff was that it must be 'my' fault....so I withdrew the cash [to prove a point to myself], waved it at the till person as I walked past, and on, out of the store!
I'm sorry, but all this plastic card stuff is primarily to save retailers and banks money...[ie make profit]....and has been packaged to us the customer/consumer as the thing of the future.....or was, anyroad.......since the physical handling of cash is time and money-consuming to the retailer and bank. [The introduction of cash-back for debit cards at the till wasn't to aid the customer....it helped cut operating costs associated with handling cash!]
My tack is this..they want it, so when-it goes wrong, they should be the one's to correct the matter equitably...the customer should not be placed in an embarrassing position at a till. If a reader is failing to read a card, then that till should be closed straight away...and sorted. [and I know it's often the card reader, as I have been known to switch to another till, without problems.]No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0 -
Thanks Alastairq, messedupmoney & minic
- the ironic thing is that I can buy train tickets online & use the card to pick them up from the very same machine that won't let me buy a cheap ticket from it directly
Nearly 2 yr discharged so any suggestions on alternate cards to apply for - perhaps I should try vanquis that keep sending me application formsas a back-up

Possibly tempting fate here, but I have not had any problems in the last 18 months with my cashminder debit card - I did initially at morrisons and tesco pay at pump, but now even they work ok.

I have no problems with my cashminder visa debit card, and I always use pay at pump with no problems. I would contact Co-Op and see what they suggest."Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can't help them, at least don't hurt them." Dalai Lama0

The printed blurb that came with my Cashminder account did mention something in the small print about potential problems with the debit card due to some machines i.e. automated petrol pumps NOT being able to do a real-time balance check to see if the money IS there in your account. Don't forget with the Cashminder account, there is NO overdraft facility, no cheque book etc, it is a basic account.
Having said that, I haven't had it declined anywhere yet (touch wood).
I can't find any link online, but it IS there in B&W on the small print..0 -
Not that that helps you in anyway, just my two penneth worth..0
