Paper part of provisional?

Hi all,
I've just booked a block of driving lessons (being doing them on and off for the past 4 years) This time I'm going to stick at by booking block.
Was told on the phone by AA that I need the paper part of my provisional. I don't ever remember getting one, I'm sure when I got my provisional it was just stuck to a letter, which said nothing about it being a counterpart.

Like I said I've been having lessons for the past 4 years with my provisional card, and it's been fine. But now they won't let me have any lessons until I have the paper part as well as my card?

I got my provisional when I was 17, 8 years ago. Can someone tell me if I've been told the right thing. As I don't want to order a replacement at £20 if I don't have to.

If you have a photo driving licence then you will have a paper part, that is were they check for endorsements etc. You need both parts and if you loose either you'll have to get a replacement.

    It's not a driving license though, it's a provisional

    Yeah a provisional driving licence.

The letter the card was attached to was the counterpart.

The fact that you only have provisional entitlements on it doesn't make a difference. It's still driving licence, and a driving licence consists of two parts - a photo card and a paper counterpart.

The AA will need to check the counterpart to ensure you haven't received any endorsements (e.g. for speeding, driving without insurance, etc). There is no way to check this on the card part. I'm quite surprised that your previous instructor(s) didn't check this before giving you lessons.

Also you need both parts to take the theory and the practical driving test or you will not be allowed to take them, your instructor should check you have them before giving any lessons or allowing you to book a test.

Did the letter look something like this?

Note the parts I've circled in red. There is no covering letter at all sent with driving licences. Only leaflets are enclosed.

Have a rummage around; there's a chance that the thing could still be around where you keep all your paperwork.

The driving school have told you the right thing. No instructor worth his salt would allow you to drive his car without checking the counterpart. Shame on the last four years worth of instructors who took a gamble! As Cajef correctly said, you will have to produce your counterpart when attending for tests. It can also be required by police or courts.
  • No I defo didn't get anything like that, it was just a bog standard letter saying enclosed is your provisional etc.

Since you're being petty, it is a provisional what?
