Is it necessary these days to transfer bank account when you move?

I've had an account with a London branch of Barclays for many years, as I used to live and work there.
Since then I've lived abroad and moved back again, but no longer in London.
I suppose I use online banking more than anything else. If I was given a new sort code and account number at my local branch it would mean notifying various people about direct debits etc. so is it more hassle than it's worth?
In other words - is it necessary to transfer my account to my local branch - are there any benefits from doing this?

No, you don't need to. I have an account that is still based in the town that I was born in. I moved away from there 40 years ago.
It's all centralised now. Long gone are the days when bank staff would recognise you and greet you by name. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Thanks !!!!!!. That's what I thought really, seeing as you can't even phone your local branch any more!0
