  • I think only you can answer that PuppyLove. I think it's down to personal choice. I would personally go anywhere within reasonable driving distance, say up to 3 hours each way but I know some people who wouldn't.

    Good Luck :D

I think a couple of long trips are definately worth the lifetime you will be more likely to get with a healthy, well-bred dog :) If it puts it in perspective, I think it's quite normal for owners in the USA to have to travel at least 3-4 hours to pick up puppies - given the size of some states, sometimes that can be their nearest breeder!

I would travel wherever I needed to for the right dog and I've had people adopting my fosters who have travelled the length of the country to come to meet them.

Some people even get dogs from abroad and travel to meet them before importing them, some people don't just want a certain breed they also want it to come from the breed's country of origin. Some people wouldn't consider say a GSD or Rottie from outside Germany

Mine were rescues, and were absolutely perfect for my situation so I drove four hours each way to get them, that was an exhausting day!

If you do make the drive, don't do it on your own!
  • Thanks guys, we have the opportunity to go up tomorrow, its about a 5 hour drive up there but im trying to convince my other half that a road trip will be fun, hes not having it at the moment though, but i'm sure i'll win him round! :)

When I got my puppy we drove 4.5 hours each way. He was well worth the effort!

We are interested in a breed the best breeders of which appear to be in the north of the countey while we are in the south. It makes perfect sense to travel for a good, ethical breeder of successful, healthy dogs imo.

We travelled from Edinburgh to Wales for my wee old rescue sheltie, she was only with us 3 tears but they were 3 wonderful years.
