Shipperless supply
Hi
I recently bought my first house and as a good MSE forum user i checked supplier tariffs and opted for a gas/elec combined supplier. There is a problem with my gas supply. It seems that i do not have a supplier.
The previous owner was with british gas however, there seems to be a registration problem. The meter outside of my house is not properly registered on XOserve. The serial number on my meter is different to the one registered, it seems a similarly named property, albeit a flat, has been confused with my house for a number of years (properties were new builds in the mid 90s). The previous owner used the meter reading from the meter outside the propoerty even though it was not accurately recorded and paid BG on this basis.
Wanting everything to be correct I tried to get the MPRN updated on the XOserve database but BG have now told me that they are not actually supplying the property and i have a shipperless supply. BG said i just have to contact any supplier and get them to generate a new MRPN.
I have two questions -
1) is this a common occurrance?
2) if i just keep quiet, will I get away with free gas?!?! Moral dilemma. I don;t think I could justify getting free gas to my conscience.
thanks

No and no.
I would suggest you double check as to whether there is any existing supplier in place by phoning 0870 608 1524 and provide your address and/or meter serial number the transporter should be able to confirm who the registered gas supplier is and provide their contact number. The meter serial number is usually located on a sticker attached to the meter and is useful in the event that there are several similar addresses and they are not clear which is the correct one.
If they cannot find any details it may be that your supply comes via an Independent Gas Transporter (IGT). To obtain information about Independent Gas Transporters you need to call Envoy on 0845 055 6199 or follow this link.0 -
Its not very common in terms of long term shipper less. Its very common that meters get crossed where they both have MPAN/MPRN's and the supplier needs to resolve which meter goes on which whilst getting the addresses correct.
Check first. Bgas may have made an error.
In terms of free gas, you are already getting it. A supplier only gets charged from their registration date so even if you can choose one now, they can't bill you for usage prior to your reading given for the registration date. Make sure you give that reading!
Whilst the supplier can't, the distributor could as its their supply network. So, if it becomes an issue whereby its discovered and the distributor chases you, if you ended up in court you would need to give them reasons as to why you did nothing. The court would possibly buy a few months, but not years.:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0 -
Also you risk a road abandonment disconnection when they do their annual checksDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

not to mention supply will be turned off in case of emergency as no contract in place from a supplier to repair meter if that is at fault.I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0
