DWP 15yr old debt payback?

Hi, just had a letter from DWP saying i owe them £225 and that I was aware of this since a previous letter.... I had not received a letter from them so I called and asked. They said it was an overpayment from them in 1997 that apparently was part paid back but there is still the amount owing.... Since i have no recollection of this, can they MAKE me pay it? It's come out of the blue & could be a mistake??
Thanks
Thanks

If you can't prove that you have paid them, then yes, you'll have to pay it back. Ask them for copies of their paperwork too. They will probably accept a payment plan if you can't afford it in one go.To repeat what others have said, requires education, to challenge it,requires brains!FEB GC/DIESEL £200/4 WEEKS0
