Santander account not closed when requested

This is a problem that's bothering me quite a bit... I opened a business account with Alliance and Leicester in early 2010, but the business was dissolved in mid-2011 so I wrote to Santander by recorded delivery to close the account with the cut-up debit card enclosed. I didn't hear anything back, and because the letter had arrived according to the Royal Mail, I presumed they'd closed the account but not accepted my change of address (which they did the last time, too, and were generally terrible with accepting my ID), so the confirmation letter might have gone to my old flat.
However, out of curiosity, I decided to log into the online banking for that account about 3 weeks ago, and the account still seemed to be open, although with a £0 balance and no statements issued since May 2011! I wrote to Santander at the address specified on their website and asked them to close the account as soon as possible, and waited for a response. I've had no response so far and according to the online banking the account is still active! I don't want to end up paying £7.50 a month or whatever it is for an account I have no use for, and it's stressing me out a bit. I'm going to write another recorded delivery letter and send that off later today, but if that doesn't work, I don't know what to do! Can anyone help?

Thanks - I'll try that later and see how I get on. I think the last time I tried phoning them (a while ago now) I couldn't get through because I didn't have a phone banking password, but hopefully that won't be the case this time!opinions4u wrote: »Ring them?0 -
Have just phoned up - apparently the account is definitely closed, although the online banking remains active for a few months afterwards. With any luck, that'll be the end of that saga... Phew!
