Ford alloy centre cap corrosion

One of the little daft things wrong with my new Mondeo is badly corroded centre caps. They're the chrome ones and it would seem that the fault is very common, with the genuine caps corroding after a year.

Can anyone recommend a third party supplier that is reliable for these? The corrosion really detracts from the look of the car and although they only cost £25 a set, I don't like the idea of having to replace them once a year.

I've seen setups on ebay where you can get generic plastic caps for a fiver for four, with 'aluminium' badges with convincing-looking Ford logos on them for about £3. Are these actually any good, or do they wash out in the first shower?

Ideally, if there's a company out there who sells good quality metallic caps (such as the ones Mitsubishi sells, which seem to last forever without tarnishing) I'd be interested to know.

More Ford cost-cutting it seems. Still, at least this Ford seems well built in most areas that actually matter, unlike the Focus ;)

Get in touch with a company that refurbish wheels.

They could probably give them a better finish.

  • All they need is rubbing down and re-lacquering. Any car body shop can do it and it won't cost a lot.

    Thanks for the advice, appreciated.

I think I'll give this a go myself. I certainly can't lose anything and the lacquer spray is only £3 a can, so if i get it right once I can keep doing them.

If they're past the point of no return, I'll just buy some silver paint instead, sand them down to a decent key and slap em back on :)
