What's a fair payment for holiday cover?

If I was paying someone to provide occasional holiday cover then I would be treating them as an employee and paying them a set amount rather then a percentage of the takings - unless they were specifically doing something special to get more customers/money over the period they were covering. I'm sorry but it's not down to you that there's a big group those weeks - it's down to her building up a good business and reputation over many years, so why should you get extra for the work she has put into that? If you're not happy with what she's paying you then either don't do it or ask for more - though personally if someone offered me £30 to cover an hour and a half I would think that was fair.

She is covered by the church insurance. She doesn't do any advertising, not even posters, she's been doing it 21 years and in this town word of mouth is very good. I know because I run a group of my own. I have a CRB check already which covers me. She makes her own business cards. She also makes her own business cards do no real costs there.

I could easily set up a rival group although I wouldn't. The instruments are shakers and I have my own actually. It's a song with mum group doing traditional nursery songs, not a franchise though other similar groups in the area are.

I think that answers all the questions Thanks for the relies so far.

Have you inspected the church's insurance policy and what it covers? Does it cover someone who is not their employee giving instructions to members of the public on the premises?

If you are not her employee, do you have insurance to cover these activities?

Its her business and you are basically an employee earning a wage.

The wage she pays you seems more than fair. Anyone who owns a business has holidays, and when they go on holiday they don't pay the staff a share of the profits while they were away.

I would suggest you stop doing this as the whole thing obviously rankles with you and this could soon become a bone of contention between you and your friend.

An employer/employee relationship can cause problems between friends and families and in this scenario it appears that it is doing

Thanks for all the replies. I think some of you have been out of order, to be honest. It isn;t pin money (how patronising!) and I have run my own business in the past, so I know how it works. I actually do a lot to promote her business via the groups that I run, and the contact I have with mums in the town. I do it out of friendship and love but it still has an impact, and I allow her to come into my groups and promote directly to mums as well.

I do know her costs, and I know she doesn't have more than I have said, and I am also aware the church insuraance covers us because, yes, I did check.

I'm not entirely sure why I would be expected to know how much she tithes to the church - I am not a church elder and don't have access to the list of what everyone gives to the church, nor would I want it!

However, some of you haven't been rude or patronising, so thank you to those of you who have treated me with respect like Martin asks us to.

Sequence - you have a point. I am self-employed so will be paying my own tax for this, and so yes, it does come down to not a load of money. On the other hand, I do enjoy doing it, and she is a friend who I like helping out as she does now have more holidays than she used to. Quite a lot actually! I think she's enjoying having some cover after all these years.

Overall I do not want to lose a friend over it, although I do feel that I'm not being entirely fairly paid. From the start I wanted a percentage or a bigger flat rate but it is so hard to discuss this kind of thing with friends.

Anyway, no doubt I'll get some more flaming but I'll remind you Martin says be nice to all Moneysavers.

I think she could actually be more generous to the church.

Considering the hourly rate for that room to hire is £40 I tend to agree, but the mums do spend in the cafe afterwards and my friend volunteers in the cafe a lot too so probably it evens out overall.

By tithing standards I'd have thought she should pay a rate for the room and then tithe on top out of her earnings. It's what I would do, but the church is happy with the agreement and that's what matters. That part of it is none of my business.

To be honest, however much your friend makes in this is irrelevant.

The question is - are you happy with what you are paid ?

If so, carry on, if not then ask her for more money.
