Home Contents - challenge assessor - How

HI everyone - we are with the AA. We were told to get two quotes to replace a carpet after a burst pipe. after visiting , the assessor has just sent a document stateing they will only pay for 30% of replacement cost and that we have to take the document to carpet right and select a carpet . I was originally told to get quotes and they would send a cheque. They have wasted our time during a v stressful time dealing with a burst pipe - Can they force us to get a carpet from carpet right ( why bother with getting quotes)- can we challenge the assessor and insist on having a cheque sent to us and we choose were to spend the money. I've never claimed insurance before and I wouldn't recommend the AA home contents based on our experiences so far - do we have any rights? would really appreciate any suggestions or ideas

We need to understand why they are only going to pay for 30% of the cost of replacement - is this stated in the letter? When a large area e.g. hall, stairs, living room is all carpeted the same and damage occurs in one area e.g. hall - insurers will only usually pay for the carpet to be replaced in the hall - they wouldn't pay the cost of the stairs and living room a well.

They probably have an agreement with carpet right so they get a good price, but I don't think you have to go there. I am sure there is a link for Financial Ombudsman view on this subject which somebody else will post.

They cannot force you to use their preferred supplier but they are entitled to reduce any settlement to the trade price they'd have received from them (rather than high street prices) unless the preferred supplier simply cannot fulfill an in any way suitable replacement (or the item is of only sentimental value and not practical eg grandmothers engagement ring thats not been worn in by anyone since she died 10 years ago - obviously not applicable for a carpet)

As to the 30% bit, well need to know why to say if thats reasonable or not
