  • Can I recommend this website for good quality bulbs and excellent customer service - http://www.homewatt.co.uk - bought £19 bulbs (!) from them 3 years ago for our bedroom in our new house (who puts halogens in a bedroom!) and now they are only £6.95 so even better (these ones were the ones we got, replacements for 35W). So have just bought some more for kitchen and bathroom. Very helpful in answering questions and their bulbs all come with min 1 yr guarantee, some are 3 years. Realise I sound like I work there but I don't, just been very pleased with them.

These are ok as 35W replacements, but the OP was looking for 50W equivalents and these will not be bright enough for that. Perfect as a bedroom light or similar though. Have used Homewatt before and can recommend their bulbs.

Dan, fire away with recommendations, based on your own experience/knowledge, it's valuable and doesn't always mean someone's trying to sell something!

Yes - I was more recommending the site than those particular bulbs.

fwor - 4 of these in our bedroom give perfectly good light we have found, but I guess it depends on the set up.

Installing more lamp fittings might be needed to get the required level of light as you will not get a GU10 lamp that is much brighter than a 50W halogen one.
If you would like a brighter halogen bulb then good quality brands like Osram, Philips, GE, Sylvania are brighter than cheaper brands.

Is there really a noticeable difference in brightness in the 50w bulbs? I bought some GE ones in Tesco in the week to replace one of a set of 4 that had gone (we didn't put the original bulbs in) - and it seemed a lot dimmer that what's there. Unfortunately the brands of the originals have now worn off - although one has a rounded front to it.

I'm wondering whether the GE ones are dimmer, or whether it's my imagination?

GE ones should be good quality, it is probably the beam angle that is different to the originals. The other issue could be that they are long life bulbs, which have thicker filaments to last longer but have reduced brightness.
