STOP Overpaying student loans

Hi all,

I am about £100 away from paying off my student loan and want to stop the SLC from deducting from my pay now, and I'll pay off the rest by BACS as the SLC has been know to "act the fool":huh: and keep deducting even though you've paid it all off.
But they tend to be on your case and to know exactly what you owe when you're not paying.

I checked my balance online and I can't see the student loan dedcutions from my pay for financial year 2011 (Arpil 2011-April 2012) showing at all.
Is anyone else having this same issue?
If so how do I reslove this? I have all my pay slips as proof.
I really don't want to phone them as they're on a 0845 number and I know this will cost me a bomb to call, is there any sort of centre which I can visit (In London) to bring in my pay slips and sort out?

Many thanks

Can't help with your situation, but 0845 doesn't cost a bomb - it's local rate, same as calling your neighbour. Normally included in phone minutes / free landline calls..
    Saving in 2013 (#98): £270/£3000

The SLC always run about a year behind in their calculations - this is because they have to wait on the years tax info in April to work out how much you've paid.

Call them now and ask them to "put a stop" on your payments, then once the payments have stopped coming out of your pay call them up to settle any amount. They will ask how much you've paid from your payslips and work it out from there. After a year they will have this confirmed by HMRC and chase/refund any difference.

However, they don't always stop the payments correctly (which is why I suggested not settling up until the payments definitely haven't come out of your pay). I tried to stop mine in Feb, then again in March, then again in April. Finally they stopped coming out of my May pay - but I still haven't managed to get the overpayments refunded

I'm sure I will eventually, but it's so irritating knowing they have MY money sitting about in their account.

I don't know if the SLC are the same company in Scotland and in England, but if so then all the offices are in Glasgow.

it is your employer that makes the deductions from your salary and will continue to do so until HMRC issue a suitable notice.

you need to contact SLC and sort the situation out

Yeah I definately want to stop this now, before I near the end as I know they'll keep deducting for a couple of months and then they'll be extra hassel trying to get my money back. I think I will have to call them now, I'm just hoping my mobile bill won't cost me an arm and leg! Thank you.

Thanks Matt, the lines are only open between 8-5.30 Mon-Fri, this is the time I'm travelling to work/at work, so I will have to call them from my mobile during my lunch break so I think it'll be around £0.35ppm and I guessing the waiting time and call time will last a good 20 min so an extra £7 on my bill that I don't really want to pay! I phoned the student loan company last week at 7pm. They're open till 8pm.

You can have them update your balance quicker if you send them copies of your payslips showing the payments.

I paid off the remainder of my loan last week and they're sent a stop notice to HMRC which get's forwarded to my employer to stop the payments. If this doesn't come through in time, they said I can send a copy of my payslip showing the overpayment and they'll refund it.

Did they not write to you and ask for you to switch to direct debit payments instead?

That would have saved you this hassle.

They are definitely open until 8pm! Use this site to find a non-geographic number for them - http://www.saynoto0870.com/ and it won't cost you anything!
