I suspect lots of folks read the forums but don't post, perhaps put off by the aggressive tenor demonstrated by a, fortunately, small minority.....shame that as I've read excellent advice both here and on other MSE forums. Let's just say I'm not surprised by your comments.;)

    Back to the original Q.

Any form of flexi ducting will introduce resistance to air flow and make the system less effective. So, as you are sensitive SOLID duct work is your only option. For your terminal go for a BIGGER size and adapt it up.

For the turn from vertical to horizontal on top of the cupboards use a swept bend NOT an elbow or round to flat converter. Using an elbow will a) make the system more noisy than it should be and b) reduce efficiency. Using a converter will shorten the life of the fan, reduce air flow by as much as 50% and sound like a jet engine taking off.

You will hear the air flow but its easy to quieten down by boxing in the top above the cupboards and wrapping the duct in rockwool.
 All together now, "Always look on the bright side of life..."
