Best time to get a deal for October

We are looking to book a package holiday to Greek islands in October outside the half-term period.
Does anyone know the optimum time to book to get the best discount assuming we are flexible with dates and destination? Is it best to book now, a few weeks ahead, or a few days? (I know some companies actually charge extra if you book late and have to collect the tickets at the airport.)

I'm glad someone has asked this as I have the same dilemma. 5 adults one infant of 5 months using 3 rooms flying from Birmingham preference is Portugal but we are open to other places. Will prices just rise or are they likely to go down when the kids go back to school?0

Most resorts in the Med stay open until the end of October for half-term but are pretty quiet and cheap if you go earlier in October prior to half-term.
Re. Where are you in the UK?
I am in the south and would be flying from Gatwick but why is that relevant?0 -
Because different airports have massively different prices, and as Gatwick is one that serves a very large portion of the south, you may be far better off going from Luton or Standsted0

Well not if I don't live near those airports; I'd have to spend what I might save getting there and it would be a whole lot more inconvenient. Also I refuse to travel with Ryaniar from Stanstead; awful company.
Anyway that was not what I was asking about which was when is the best time to book a package holiday? Do they get cheapest the closer to departure or do they dip in price beforehand and then rise again?0
