Changed supplier from British Gas to Scottish Power. Have received my final bill today and they have added a cancellation fee of £30!! I have changed supplier a couple of years ago but cannot remember having to pay a fee to change before. Changed through USwitch. Anybody know if this is normal and can they legally do this. Any advise would be appreciated.

What British Gas did was to offer customers the chance to freeze the rate they paid for there gas and elec however as it was to freeze till 09 or 2010 then the terms and con clearly state that of the customer was to change the supplier before the end of the contract which would be either April 09 or April 2010 then they would have to pay a cancellation fee.

I think it depends which tarrif you are on. Certianly some of their fixed price tarrifs have cancellation charges of £20 to £30 if you cancel before the fixed term period ends.

That would probably be the electricity cancellation fee for price protection 2010. If you have gas from them as well, you may find another fee when the final bill for that comes through.
