Help with slipping fan belt

I wonder if anyone can give me some advice.
Im pretty sure the fan belt is slipping on my car - I intermittently get that screeching noise!
Does anyone know if this is something I will need to get fixed? I keep driving the car hoping its going to go away but its been a few days now (not on every journey though).
If it needs fixing, is it expensive?
And am I doing any damage by continuing to drive the car?
Its a peugeot 206 (not sure if that is relevant).
Thanks in advance for any help.

Oh, well it's a very easy job to do. Just needs tightening up. A mechanic should be able to do it for about £10.0

Thank you mr thrifty0

Tighten or probably best to replace as very few are adjustable these days.0

More likely to be water pump bearing or alternator bearing of wheel bearing. Also, some cars have metal built into their brake pads. when pads worn down to recommended replacement level, this metal contacts the brake disks deleberately causing a screech, this warns driver that brake pads need replacement. I would have a car savvy friend have a quick look at it. The belt tension is easily checked/discounted.0

once you've let it slip for a while it needs changing as it is burningDoes anyone know if this is something I will need to get fixed?
i akin this to a major loss of blood and think well if i ignore it the blood will stop flowing soon.........0 -
Should it replace a £5 belt or should i wait for it to knacker the battery and alternator or snap and boil the engine or wrap itself around the cambelt?
Decisions decisions.....Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
It could be the fanbelt needing replacing (not just tightening) but it could also be the clutch release bearing. If the screech appears when you let out the clutch (that's when the engine revs build up) get the bearing checked."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. Check the bearing? It's inside the clutch housing, meaning just to check it would need removal of the gearbox. Not something you can just check.
OP, get it to a garage. Failed alternator belt can mean new engine time if it wraps around the crankshaft pulley as the cambelt runs behind it. Bits of belt end up interfering with cambelt = toodles too end.0 -

You check the bearing by moving the clutch in and out. If it screeches each time you do it, then it's the clutch release bearing that's at fault, and you get it replaced which means the bell housing has to come off."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. Fair enough, I thouht you meant visually check for play etc.
A lot of work to spin a bearing
